Donate or Sell

When you are ready to replace something large and "reusable", consider donating the older item to a charitable outlet like Goodwill, the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Vietnam Veterans, or another reuse center in your area. Most of the time, these groups can repair the item (if needed) and help it find a second home rather than fill up the landfill. There are more than 6,000 reuse centers around the country, ranging from specialized programs for building materials and collections for local schools, to the commonly recognized Goodwill and Salvation Army stores, according to the Reuse Development Organization.

Of course, you can always hold a yard sale or give-away. If your neighbors are able to join in too, you can share the work and increase the number of unused things that can find new homes and new uses.
